Can you take a trip to Portland Maine and see everything in 24 hours? Yes! Maybe you can’t see everything but you can get quite a good overview of it!
I recently hopped on a flight to Portland Maine. The plane arrived in Portland at noon. The airport is a quick 15-20 minute ride into the downtown old port of Portland. I took a shuttle ride to my hotel which saved me a $17 cab ride into town.
I booked the Hilton Garden Inn once I landed. This hotel has possibly the best location to the old town port. It’s off Commercial Street and Franklin. It’s next to the ferry marina and Customs House. Really an ideal location. Check out my review.
After getting settled at my hotel, I asked about tours. They gave me a pamphlet for Old City Tours. I picked a package for $54 that included a 90 minute cruise of the harbor and a 90 minute trolley tour. A great way to see the city and all the main points of interest.
I had time before the cruise, so I walked around the boutique shops in the historic district and even stopped at the iconic Holy Donuts for a famous potato donut. I decided to do the cruise on day one. Left at 3:15pm and got back at 5pm. I had a lovely cruise of 4 lighthouses and all the beautiful historic Víctorian homes.
I then headed to dinner at Scales on the waterfront. Scales is the high end restaurant that’s the place to go. After dinner I headed to bed as I did notice quite a few homeless out and about.
In the morning, I had a fantastic free breakfast at my hotel and then hopped on the trolley at 10:15 am. We got great commentary about the local historic points and then got 25 minutes to spend at the lighthouse for photos. Stunning!
Got back to town at noon and headed to the airport for my 2:30pm flight home. The Airport is small and takes only a few minutes to get through!
But all in all, a great 24 hours in Portland Maine!
