I selected this five star hotel in Oslo by mistake. I was aiming for the Grand Hotel. It was $100 less. But when I exited the train, I immediately saw this hotel and just decided to book it. I was so glad I did.
If you take the train into the city center, it’s the third stop at the theater stop. You exit on the side that has Karl Johans gate. And you walk straight out and see the Hotel Continental across the street. Such a prime location. Next to the Trains and buses and shopping area. It’s also a very high end area. And safe.
This hotel is part of the American Express Fine Resorts and Hotels collection so you get all the upgrades including a $100 dining credit. The room was $350 and came to $384 with taxes. So although I could have gotten the Grand Hotel for $100 less, I got the food credit which ended up being well worth it.
The check in was easy. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Gave me a upgrade and key and helped me plan my day out.
The room was pretty. A nicely sized room but not huge be any means. The bed was amazing. Soft and luxurious and I didn’t want to get up. My window faced a quiet street with nothing really to look at.
The bathroom was quite big with a large shower. They had Molten Brown toiletries. Shower was hot and pressure was average. I did hate that there was a step up to the bathroom. I kept tripping.
Overall my room was very nice. With a good bed and the best location, I don’t know if it can be beat. It’s just two blocks from the harbor where all the dining is. And it’s right near the shopping area and palace and theater.
The breakfast was pretty good. They had a selection of pastries, fruits, juices, cheeses and fish. As well as eggs and bacon and other typical hot dishes. You could also order eggs cooked your way. It wasn’t the best buffet I’ve been to but it’s got everything you need.
The dinner credit could be used at the bar or Theatercaffen restaurant. The restaurant opened in 1900 and has long been a favorite of locals and celebrities. You can see photos of those celebrities in the entry of the restaurant. Inside the elegant setting has a trendy Art Deco vibe. It was beautiful.
But be prepared for high prices. My steak dinner and two cocktails came out to $75. But it was fantastic! My filet was cooked to perfection and the Bernaise was delicious. So were my French fries and salad that came with it. I was truly satisfied!
Overall, I had a lovely stay here. I would return for the beds. Even if it cost more!!
